Grant Green - Grant's First Stand.
This album is the start of Grant Green's extensive recording career with Blue Note. He was 30 years old, but had been playing professionally for more than a decade. The same week he recorded with Lou Donaldson and Baby Face Willette ("Tis Here") and also "Face To Face" (again with Willette). Three albums in the first week! On the otherhand after also recording three albums, Baby Face Willette returned to obscurity!
The trio album is lead by Grant Green (guitar) with Willette (organ) and Ben Dixon (drums).
Grant Green was best known for his bebop / blues guitar playing (eventually producing his top albums "Idle Moments" and "Matador"). As a debut album this is very good. He plays with authority and skill. Baby Face Willette was also a skillful organist whose style was different from his rivals at that time, notably Jimmy Smith. JS liked to play sustained chords, Willette is more of a "pianist".
